The Pursuit of Academic Excellence and Self-Actualisation with NEP 2020
National Education Policy 2020 is based upon the principle of holistic learning, for the complete liberalisation and understanding of self. In such a scenario, one must develop not only cognitive capacities, but look to nurture social, ethical, and emotional capabilities as well.
Critical thinking and problem-solving meet empathy, inclusion, and equality, to make learning more well-rounded, useful, and engaging to a diverse demographic of students. The willingness to grow is supported by the urgency to innovate, adapt, and reimagine educational systems, in an endeavour to meet the needs of the 21st-century world.
Experiential, flexible, learner-centric, discovery-oriented, inclusive, empowering, NEP 2020 has sought to transform pedagogy as we know it!
And with its introduction and consequent acceptance, expedited by the current global health challenges, we’ve witnessed a major turning point in Indian education.
In this sharp read, Camu addresses some key questions relating to NEP 2020, answered by a panel of esteemed and renowned academicians.
What are some of the foundational changes proposed by NEP?
The forward-thinking policy states that education should take on a less theory-oriented and more application-based approach, where students are encouraged to think critically, creatively, and consciously.
As such, institutions are working towards a multidisciplinary education system that aims to develop all capacities of human beings – intellectual, aesthetic, social, physical, emotional, and moral. In an integrated manner, nonetheless!
In this educational approach, students get to learn and explore subjects and curriculums from various disciplines. Education is not limited to a particular stream or field but provides opportunities to embrace all.
Following are the major game-changers.
- Liberal Education
- Outcome-Based Education
- Choice Based Credit System
- Design Thinking
- Competency-Based Learning
- Adaptive Learning
- Hybrid Learning
What is the tentative timeline for its implementation?
NEP 2020 was first introduced on the 29th of July, 2020, after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had hit the country.
According to the Union Cabinet, the policy is gearing up to be implemented across states from the academic year 2022 – 23.
During this interim, however, institutes have already begun making radical changes to teaching and learning.
The pandemic served as an inflexion point for EdTech, with the quick adoption of tech-enabled learning.
Offline classes went online to ensure the continuity of education, whilst maintaining social distancing norms.
The biggest takeaway from this is the fact that most institutes have had to learn on the go, and will continue to do so.
Timelines and schedules are no good without flexibility and resilience.
How do institutes hope to overcome the barriers to change?
The transition from on-campus to online learning has shed light on a grave digital divide, where we see large sections of students struggling to access educational resources due to scarce internet access.
Students living in rural areas are robbed of the opportunity to continue studying due to a lack of educational tools like smartphones and tablets, all of which make learning at home a possibility.
The transformation has also highlighted a gaping hole in teacher efficacy, with digital literacy being the need of the hour.
Now that the repercussions of the pandemic are somewhat controllable, academicians are trying to adapt to the losses caused by this new dimension of teaching and learning, working hard to develop strategies that support their students, teachers, and institutions!
1. Advocating for government initiatives that make educational tools accessible and affordable to all demographics.
2. Creating holistic and proactive solutions to introducing digital tools to students and teachers, one that focuses on the benefits.
3. Building sound training programmes that help students and teachers on board into hybrid learning modules with ease.
4. Introducing interactive media and tailor-made content that engages diverse learning levels.
4. Providing support infrastructure to educational stakeholders to help them manage these uncertain and confusing times.
