NEP 2020: Camu offers ready to implement solutions that are totally aligned with the new educational policy

AR Swaminathan,
Co-Founder & CEO – Camu

The new National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) unveiled by the Ministry of Education on July 30, is a commitment towards the future of students in India. For over three decades, the country has been saddled with a myopic system that limits itself to theory-based rote learning and lackluster teaching methodologies. NEP 2020 has uprooted this very foundation and aligned it to the real-world situation where industries go beyond mere educational qualifications and seek practical application of knowledge through creative and analytical thinking.

In comparison to an educational system that was a teacher-centric, NEP 2020 has tipped the balance of power in numerous ways. Students, which are the obvious audience and yet were the most ignored, now have a voice and a choice. The lack of flexibility has always been one of the drawbacks of the traditional method of teaching and the new policy highlights this important aspect.

The introduction of vocational courses in schools, and major and minor electives at higher education, offer them choices to shape their learning according to their professional ambitions and personal interests. This holistic approach will not only make education more broad-based but also more engaging. So, for example, a Science student with an ear for music now need not have to compromise passion for the profession. The traditional marks system, which relied upon percentages will now make way for a more evolved grading system that provides an accurate indicator of performance. The new NEP intends to integrate the Indian education system with global tenets.

The regulatory system of higher education will ensure that the
functions of regulation, accreditation, funding and academic standard setting will be governed by independent bodies. Accreditation will provide institutions with autonomy; it will also provide all stakeholders with the assurance of a good caliber education. The new semester system allows pace-based learning; the emphasis is to provide a flexible curriculum through an interdisciplinary approach, creating multiple exit points. The introduction of the Credit system facilitates easy student movements between semesters and institutions. As a leading provider of educational software for institutions across the world, Camu has propagated this system since its inception in 2013. With Outcome-Based Education, Choice Based Credit System and other advanced solutions, Camu is ready to integrate with institutions that are eager to make the shift.
