Enhancing Academic Integrity: Camu’s Online Approach to Review and Re-evaluation of Exam Answer Scripts
Following the release of examination results, the Controller of Examinations (CoE) is frequently inundated with applications from students who had anticipated better outcomes, seeking a review or of their papers. In cases where the review remains unsatisfactory, students may choose a comprehensive re-evaluation of their paper.
Effectively managing these requests poses a considerable challenge. It necessitates meticulous tracking of all review and re-evaluation applications, and careful assignment of papers to respective reviewers or re-evaluators while maintaining the confidentiality of students’ identities. Additionally, the prescribed fees for these services must be promptly collected from the students, all within the constrained timeframe typically allotted for review and re-evaluation processes.
With the recent update to the COE module, Camu now makes managing reviews and re-evaluations a breeze by facilitating the entire process to be done online.
Revaluation Configuration
Firstly, Camu provides a new screen for the institution to configure parameters related to reviews and re-evaluations of exam answer scripts.
The Controller of Examination, or their delegate, can enter the dates for the window during which applications for review and re-evaluation will be accepted by the students.
Institutions may also choose not to offer reviews and re-evaluations for certain types of papers. For example, generally, re-evaluating practical papers is not allowed.
Camu then allows the CoE staff to configure the fee payments associated with reviews and re-evaluations. It may be a fixed fee per paper, or the institution may offer slab rates depending on the number of papers for which review/re-evaluation is requested.
Faculty Planning
For each course or paper, the CoE can assign one or more faculty members to be responsible for processing the review request.
Submitting Requests for Review
On the student portal, the new menu option ‘Revaluation’ directs students to a screen listing all recently evaluated papers, along with their corresponding review/re-evaluation status.
Students can select the papers for which they wish to request a review.
As the student submits the review request, the system calculates and displays the corresponding fee that the student must pay. The student has the option to either pay the fee online immediately or choose to pay later.
If a student is unable to raise the review request themselves for any reason, a faculty member can also initiate a review request on behalf of the student.
Paper Review
The faculty members assigned are responsible for scanning the answer script requested for review by the students for the particular course.
These scanned copies are then published to the student’s portal for their review.
Paper Review – Student View
Students can revisit the ‘Revaluation/Paper Review’ screen, where all their requests are listed along with their respective status. For the reviewed papers, students will now have the ability to view the scanned files uploaded by the reviewer.
Students who remain dissatisfied with the review have the option to submit a re-evaluation request. Once again, the corresponding fee is calculated, and the student can proceed to pay the fees online or choose to pay later.
Re-Evaluation List
The CoE staff can view the list of all re-evaluation requests submitted by students and generate distinct barcodes for each request. These barcodes are then printed and affixed to the corresponding physical answer scripts. This process allows faculty members conducting the re-evaluation to do so anonymously without knowledge of the student’s identity.
After the re-evaluation is done, the CoE staff can enter the marks by simply scanning the barcode. Once the re-evaluation process is completed, the CoE staff can mark the papers as finalized, triggering the update of marks on the student’s grade sheet, which can then be published.
