Washington Accord: What Is It?
The Washington Accord is a multilateral agreement between organizations or organizations in charge of accrediting and recognising engineering degrees at the undergraduate level. It is also a member of the International Engineering Alliance (IIEA), which includes agreements for educational programmes for professional engineers, engineering technologists, and engineering technicians. There are two agreements for professional engineers and one for the competency of engineering technologists.
The agreement was signed in 1989 by member nations that recognised tertiary engineering degrees inside their borders as well as national accrediting agencies. They also decided to collaborate to guarantee engineers’ mobility among the member nations. The agreement is a self-governing, autonomous pact between national organizations that grant undergraduate programmes with external accreditation so that its graduates are eligible to enter professional engineering practises.

Notably, the agreement only applies to undergraduate engineering degrees; postgraduate programmes in engineering technology are not covered.
What Is The Washington Accord’s Membership Procedure?
The body or the organization must show that its procedures and standards are significant to be granted signatory status under the agreement. Since a committee made up of the signatories would be reviewing the body, it must get the unanimous approval of all signatories.
