The Washington Accord is a multilateral agreement between organizations or organizations in charge of accrediting and recognising engineering degrees at the undergraduate level. It is also a member of the International Engineering Alliance (IIEA), which includes agreements for educational programmes for professional engineers, engineering technologists, and engineering technicians. There are two agreements for professional engineers and one for the competency of engineering technologists.
The agreement was signed in 1989 by member nations that recognised tertiary engineering degrees inside their borders as well as national accrediting agencies. They also decided to collaborate to guarantee engineers' mobility among the member nations. The agreement is a self-governing, autonomous pact between national organizations that grant undergraduate programmes with external accreditation so that its graduates are eligible to enter professional engineering practises.
To make sure that each other's approved programmes are roughly equal, the national organizations (signatories) maintain a clearly defined periodic review procedure. Additionally, they make sure that their results follow the published professional engineer graduate attribute example.
For example, the six initial signing entities from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States confirmed the agreement in 1989. They concluded that their procedures, rules, standards, and requirements for granting accreditation to programmes at the university level were essentially identical.
They also consented to grant graduate programmes recognised by signatories other than themselves the same rights and privileges as their own approved programmes. On the other hand, signatory nations will also recognise and treat graduates of approved schools in those nations fairly. These nations' curricula will adhere to academic and professional norms, respectively.
Notably, the agreement only applies to undergraduate engineering degrees; postgraduate programmes in engineering technology are not covered.
The body or the organization must show that its procedures and standards are significant to be granted signatory status under the agreement. Since a committee made up of the signatories would be reviewing the body, it must get the unanimous approval of all signatories.
Additionally, among the parties to the agreement, the National Board of Accreditation of India (NBA) represents India as a member organization. As a result, institutions hoping to be accredited strive to enhance both their overall institutional performance and curriculum development.
The Accord ensures that certified engineering degree programmes offered by member bodies are recognised by other member bodies. It creates benchmark criteria for those entities' professional engineering education.
Signatories commit to accord graduates of each other's approved programmes the same recognition, rights, and privileges as they accord graduates of their accord programmes (or suggest to the appropriate national registration agency, if different).
By including these clauses, the Accord makes it easier for graduates to move between signatory countries and allows for a better knowledge of each country's engineering education and certification systems.
